What Scenes does

  1. One keypress switches your whole Mac between kinds of work: hold Control and Option and tap Space to see your Scenes, let go to switch. A quick tap takes you back to the last one.
  2. Not just windows: apps reopen, windows land where they were, and the tabs, documents and wallpaper come back with them.
  3. Put a Scene to sleep: its apps quit and give the memory back. Wake it and everything returns in place.
  4. Leave a note: it's waiting under the menu bar the next time you open that Scene.

Compare

macOS has Spaces. Scenes brings back your work.

Spaces and Stage Manager move windows you already have open. Scenes remembers what each kind of work looks like, and puts all of it back, even after a restart.

FAQ

A few things worth knowing.

Something else? Email support@scenesmac.com and a real person replies.

The app

How is this different from Spaces?

Spaces gives you numbered desktops, and macOS has no public way for apps to name them, switch them or move windows between them. Tools that try need System Integrity Protection turned off and break with updates.

Scenes works on the desktop you're on and changes what's on it: apps, windows, tabs, documents and wallpaper. If you use Spaces too, windows on your other desktops stay where they are. A Scene that lives somewhere else, like a browser in full screen, takes you to it.

Which browsers' tabs come back?

Safari, Chrome, Arc, Dia, Brave, Edge, Vivaldi and Chromium, beta and canary builds included. Scenes saves the tab each window was showing and brings you back to it when you switch, and every open tab when a Scene sleeps. Firefox, Zen and other Firefox-based browsers don't let other apps read their tabs, so their windows come back but not their tabs.

Does it work with more than one display?

Yes. Layouts are remembered per display setup, so your laptop-only layout never overwrites your desk layout, and a Scene can start by itself when a particular display connects.

Can I change the shortcuts, or automate it?

Every shortcut can be changed or turned off. For automation there's a scenes:// link for every action and Shortcuts actions like Switch to Scene and Sleep Scene, so it works from Shortcuts, Spotlight, Raycast, Alfred or a script.

Privacy and your work

What permissions does it need?

Accessibility, so it can move and resize windows. To bring back browser tabs, macOS asks once per browser before Scenes can read them; say no and everything else still works. No Screen Recording: desk pictures are drawn from window positions, never captured.

Will it quit apps with unsaved work?

No. By default Scenes hides the apps you're not using. When a Scene sleeps, or you choose to quit other apps, anything with unsaved work asks you to save first, exactly as if you'd quit it yourself.

Does Scenes collect any data?

No analytics and no account. Your Scenes live in one file on your Mac. The app only goes online to activate or remove a license key.
